  2. trees by selective pruning. It originated in
  3. China many centuries ago and later spread to 
  4. Japan. Some specimens in China are around
  5. 1,000 years old and some in the imperial
  6. Japanese collection are more than 300 years
  7. old. In Japan, bonsai trees are regarded as
  8. works of art and can be valued at millions of
  9. pounds. British collectors have paid as much
  10. as £15,000 for one tree.
